The First Days of Summer 2022: Live, Local Music This Week

Outreach Notebook Will Return Sunday May 29

Welcome back to #eastannarbor everyone! We had an eventful week and also a minor health setback.

Yesterday Saturday May 21st included a visit to Peace House Ypsi for the Washtenaw General Defense Committee Mass Meeting. Lots of good things happening in the GDC wheelhouse these days with updates on local Starbucks Union organizing, Great Lakes Coffee Roasters Striking workers were present to give an update on their efforts at workplace democracy and also it was announced that GDC is purchasing a house in Ypsilanti which will serve not only as GDC HQ, but also a community organizing space. Let the de-commodification commence!

Outreach Notebook will be back next weekend for a Memorial Day Preview of the summer of reparations ahead of us and other activities. Stay tuned for that and thanks for any feedback you have. Tell us what you think is important in terms of local policy-making that is forthcoming.

We are otherwise taking a break from local politics and civic activities and shift to more of an arts focus for this week. There are a few local music events coming up this week of note we will cover and then a brief photo log from this week’s #eastannarbor walkabouts. Please feel free to add events coming this week that we don’t cover below by clicking on the “leave a comment” button above.

First up today, Sunday 5/22 at Ziggy’s we have Em Spel from Chicago joining Dr Peter Larson and his Nyatiti Band for a night of East African inspired psychedelic trance jams.

Later this week at Ziggy’s we have Ypsilanti sludge rock heroes BUBAK taking stage with special guest Towner. Don’t forget to bring your eaplugz and a towel.

Looking elsewhere, we see that Jib Kidder and others will be performing at Dreamland Theater in Ypsi on Washington St.

Looks like Michigan Happenings is still being updated. We found a show happening this Wednesday May 25 at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor.

Myna [nee Rashmi Pandian] is a local hip-hop artist. Raised in Ann Arbor, the Indian-American alternative hip-hop singer released Lemon Tree (2017) on Soundcloud when just 17 years old.

Joining Myna will be local rockers Dirt Room, Sue Sandal, and Raw Honey, who is otherwise known as Ypsilanti indie folk-rock singer-songwriter Maggie Hopp.

What else is happening around us we should know about?

And finally today we submit an #eastannarbor photolog from the previous week. Got any titles for these photos? Please send them our way! Have a great day!
